MASON, Ohio — Following three games in pool play, the sixth-seeded Olivet Nazarene University baseball team had already stamped their way into the semifinal round with two wins in pool play. However, they still were to play Covenant College (Ga.) at 1 p.m. (EST), and the Tigers took out the Scots 5-2 to improve to 3-1 in pool play.

The Tigers (35-20) sent freshman Madison Foster (Indianapolis, Ind.) (4-3) to the mound. He went a complete seven innings, allowing only two runs off six hits.

The Scots (28-19) started Micah Mabe (7-2) who pitched a complete game allowing five runs — three earned — off five hits.

Covenant threatened in the first inning with two, two-out singles but failed to bring anyone across. At the same time, Mabe didn’t allow any Tiger hits until their half of the fourth. In the top half of the fourth, the Scots went up 2-0 after a Sterling Witt double scored Scott Gillespie, and Perry Rigby singled to bring home Gillespie. ONU responded with a run in the bottom half when Dan Schneider (West Salem, Wis.) doubled to lead off the inning. An out later, Ryan Kern (Bloomington, Ill.) grounded out but scored the run. Neither team did anything until the sixth when the Tigers put together four hits and took advantage of an error, scoring four runs. Adrian Perez (Chicago, Ill.) singled to score a run. Matt Davenport (Swayzee, Ind.) singled to score two runs, and Josh Altmann (Homer Glen, Ill.) singled to score Kern to make it 5-2. Foster got the Scots out in order in the seventh to end the game.

Matt Davenport went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Adrian Perez went 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run.  Also for ONU, Josh Altmann had a RBI on his only hit of the game.

For Covenant, Sterling Witt went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run, and Scott Gillespie went 2-for-3 with one run. David Lockwood and Perry Rigby had the only two other hits for the Scots.

With the win, the Tigers play in the semifinal round at 5 p.m. (EST) against No. 1-seeded California Baptist University.
