WHITING, Ind. – The Olivet Nazarene University cheerleading squad entered the world of competitive cheerleading like they meant business. The Tigers captured first place in their first ever competition, winning the Large Cheer division at the NCA/NDA NAIA Regionals held at Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on Saturday, Feb. 9. Olivet was one of 10 teams at the competition and received a bronze designation.
“This is a step in the right direction for our program,” said senior Michael Bishop (Bourbonnais, Ill.). “We made a few mistakes and our level of difficulty will need to go up, but this should help build for the future. We were pleased with our performance.”
The win qualifies the Tigers for the 2013 NCA/NDA NAIA Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. from April 10-14. Competitive Cheer and Dance is currently considered an emerging sport by the NAIA and is in its one year provisional period before being considered as a championship sport. There are currently 60 NAIA institutions that sponsor a cheer and dance team.
“I am very proud of all the hard work and dedication that everyone put in over the last few months,” said head coach Karen Eylander. “The team did an excellent job of representing Olivet.”
