DEERFIELD, Ill. — Even though the Olivet Nazarene University
men’s basketball team struggled to find consistency in its game on Wednesday
night, Jan. 22, the Tigers were successful, winning 80-71 against Trinity International
University (Ill.). Sophomore Reid
Farchmin (Mahomet, Ill.) helped lead the Tigers down the stretch of the second
half with 12 points and four rebounds in the final 11 minutes.
Out of the gate, the Tigers (8-11, 6-4) were slow, not taking
a lead until the 13:12 mark. However, with 7:25 remaining, Olivet led 22-14 — keeping the Trojans (3-17, 1-8) to only seven points over the seven-minute
period. Meanwhile, the home team was unwilling to let ONU take complete control
as scoring started to pick up. Over the next five minutes, there were 20 points
scored, and the game was tied at 28 apiece. The Tigers only led by a point,
32-31, at the half after giving up 17 points in the final seven minutes.
In the first half, Olivet shot 15-for-31 from the field (48.4
percent), 0-for-5 from the three-point line (0 percent) and 2-for-5 from the
free-throw line (40 percent). Rebounds were even at 19 apiece. The Tigers
had seven offensive rebounds and committed six turnovers. TIU shot 28.6 percent
from the field, 33.3 percent from the three-point line and 84.6 percent from
the free-throw line. The Trojans committed five first-half turnovers and had
nine offensive rebounds.
At the 10:44 mark of the second half, the first nine minutes
had already seen five ties and four lead changes between the two teams before the
game was at 51 apiece. Over the next three minutes, the game was still a
one-point game as the Tigers led 58-57. However, from there the Tigers took a
10-2 run and led by nine, 68-59, their largest of the game. During the final
4:12, the Tigers made 10-of-11 free-throws and maintained as much as a five-point
lead until the final horn, gaining their eighth win of the season.
Sophomore Reid Farchmin led the Tigers with a career-high 24
points on 7-for-13 shooting, 1-for-3 from the three-point line and 9-for-9 from
the free-throw line. He added nine rebounds in 31 minutes.
Junior Austin Davis
(North Augusta, S.C.) finished with a 20 points on 6-for-14 shooting and 8-for-9
from the free-throw line. He added three rebounds in 35 minutes.
Larson (Tolono, Ill.) finished with 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the
field and 2-for-3 from the free-throw line. He added four rebounds in 21 minutes
before fouling out with five minutes to play.
Junior Zach Wagner
(Roselle, Ill.) finished with 11 points, making 5-of-5 field goals. He also
finished with eight rebounds and five assists in 30 minutes.
Thomas Amrine led TIU with 17 points on 6-for-15 shooting
from the field and 5-for-13 from the three-point line. He added two rebounds
and two assists in 33 minutes. Justin Peeples finished with 14 points on 2-for-5
shooting and 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, and had two rebounds and one assist
in 33 minutes. Sam Salem added 11 points, two rebounds and three assists in 21
Overall, the Tigers shot 29-for-61 from the field (47.5
percent), 1-for-11 from the three-point line (9.1 percent) and 21-for-28 from
the free-throw line (75 percent). They outrebounded the Trojans 43-29, and
committed 11 turnovers and totaled 10 assists, with 19 offensive rebounds and
TIU shot 21-for-56 from the field (37.5 percent), 8-for-26 from
beyond the arc (30.8 percent) and 21-for-25 from the free-throw line (84
percent). The Trojans had 12 assists, 10 turnovers, 13 offensive rebounds and seven

against conference opponent Roosevelt University (Ill.) at 3 p.m
