BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — On a cool September evening ideal for soccer, the Olivet Nazarene University men's soccer team took No. 17 Ashford University (Iowa) to the wire and walked away with a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Ashford (5-1-2) scored first, at the 17:21 mark, when Tony Smith scored off a header when the ball bounced through the box. He was assisted by Javier Ramirez.
The Tigers (4-2-1) responded nine minutes into the second half when midfielder Robby Gunderson (Downers Grove, Ill.) scored on a pass from Michael Da Silva (Brampton, Ontario, Canada).
During the remaining 37 minutes of regulation, each team had numerous chances but wasn't able to cash in. In the first overtime, Ashford was the only team to place a shot on goal. The second OT was no different than the first, and the game ended in a draw.
ONU outshot Ashford 17-11 overall and placed six of those shots on goal. Tigers keeper Zach Chambers (Flanders, N.J.) finished with two saves.
Olivet opens conference play at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, with a road game against Judson University (Ill.).
