BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Coming off a regular season that concluded with five wins, the Olivet University men's soccer team was ready for postseason play. They welcomed Judson University (Ill.) for CCAC Tournament Quarterfinal play on Saturday, Nov. 3. The Tigers played in their sixth overtime game this season, but were victorious again in a 2-1 overtime win.
The Tigers (12-4-3) played the Eagles (8-8-3) to a draw in the first half, as both teams had three shots and one save in the period. In the second half, at the 68:34 mark, Judson pulled ahead with a goal from Santiago Munoz. Munoz was assisted by Walter Lopez as the ball was passed into the middle of the box and scored. The Eagle lead would be erased just three minutes later as sophomore Robby Gunderson (Downers Grove, Ill.) scored his sixth goal this year, assisted by junior Michael Da Silva (Brampton, Ontario, Canada).
The game remained tied the rest as the half as the defenses ruled, forcing overtime. Three minutes in, Da Silva again found the open man, passing it to the middle of the box where sophomore Todd Bevan (Schereville, Ind.) struck it in to the back of the net, lifting Olivet to the 2-1 victory. Bevan now has six goals this year and Da Silva has 27 points.
In a game where neither team was able to find much offensive success, the Tigers won in the shot column nine to six. Freshman goalkeeper Zach Cambers (Flanders, N.J.) played all 94 minutes of the win, making one save in the process.
Olivet plays St. Xavier University (Ill.) in CCAC Tournament Semifinal play on the road on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The winner will play in the championship game on Nov. 10.
