CLINTON, Iowa — Up against their toughest battle thus far in 2013, the Olivet Nazarene University men’s soccer team traveled to play No. 7 Ashford University (Iowa) in their first road game of the season. The recently ranked top 10 Saints scored the first two goals of the game and didn’t look back, winning 3-1 over the Tigers.
Ashford (5-1) didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, scoring the first goal in the 18th minute with Javier Ramirez scoring his third goal of the year when Murilo Ceruli set him up for the first goal of the game. The Saints scored again, only seven minutes later, on Daniel Dreier’s seventh goal of 2013, and Ramirez had the assist.
However, the Tigers (1-2-1) responded only a minute later on senior Robby Gunderson’s (Downers Grove, Ill.) first goal of the season. He was assisted by Michael Da Silva (Brampton, Ontario, Canada).
To the Tigers advantage, they were able to keep the Saints at bay for the next 60 minutes, but so was Ashford’s defense. The score remained 2-1 as ONU was unable to find a way to tie the game. On the other hand, the Saints scored their third goal in the 87th minute off the foot of Ceruli. He was assisted by Almeida and Langhans.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Chambers (Flanders, N.J.) recorded three saves in the loss. The Tigers committed 12 fouls to the Saints' eight.
ONU is back in action on Saturday, September 14, at University of Michigan-Dearborn at 3 p.m. (EST).
