ElGIN, Ill. — Senior Robby
Gunderson (Downers Grove, Ill.) opened up the 2013 season with only one
goal through seven games, but his second
goal of the season proved to be all that the ONU men’s soccer team needed to
beat CCAC opponent Judson University (Ill.). Gunderson is second on the team with seven points. The Tigers won 2-0 after an opening
loss in conference play earlier in the week.
Judson (6-2, 2-1) had not previously lost in conference play, but two second half goals by the Tigers (4-3-1, 1-1) gave the Eagles their
first loss eight games in. After a first half that was dominated by great defense
and good goalie play, ONU turned up their offensive attack in the second half.
With less than 25 minutes remaining in the game, the Tigers
scored first when Gunderson found the net for the second time. He was assisted
by senior Michael Da Silva (Brampton,
Ontario, Canada). ONU was forced to hold on to a 1-0 lead for the next 17
minutes until the 83rd minute when freshman Miguel Fierro (Urbana, Ill.) scored his third goal of the year by controlling a cross from John Nardozzi
(Oakville, Ontario, Canada), who provided the assist, his first of 2013.
The game was physical with both teams reaching double digits
in the foul count; however, Judson only had cards handed out.
Sophomore goalkeeper Zach
Chambers (Flanders, N.J.) recorded a season-high nine saves en route to his
second shutout of the season. Each team had its fair share of shots. ONU
finished with 15 (7 SOG), and Judson had 19 (9 SOG). The Tigers had three
individuals with at least three shots each.
ONU will be back in action at home on Wednesday, October 2, at 6 p.m. against
CCAC opponent Purdue University-Calumet (lnd.).
