BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — A 3-0 win over the Illinois Institute of
Technology (IIT) gave the ONU men’s soccer team their 10th win of the season and
sixth shutout. Olivet defeated the Scarlet Hawks in a non-conference game on a
chilly Saturday night. Senior Michael Da
Silva (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) provided two assists against IIT and added
to his team-leading 17 points.
It didn’t take long for the home team to get on the board
(3:10). ONU (10-4-1) took advantage of their first of eight corner kicks of the
evening. Da Silva played a perfect ball to the far side of the box, and Yonda Abogunrin (Vernon Hills, Ill.)
headed in his second goal of the year.
Neither team could find the net until the 26th minute
when Tyler Gill (Plainfield, Ill.) scored
his first goal of 2013. Da Silva was there to provide his fifth assist of the season. The Tigers tried their best to extend
the lead before the half ended but only managed the two goals in the first half.
In the second half, ONU had to wait until the 90th minute
before they scored a third time. Freshman Miguel
Fierro (Urbana, Ill.) was assisted by Brett
Robertson (Monee, Ill.). IIT (5-7-3)
struggled to do anything offensively as they weren’t able to threaten
The Tigers dominated the shot column, winning 25-3 with 13
on goal. Sophomore Richard Paret (West
Chicago, Ill.) had five to his credit.
Freshman goalkeeper Kevin
Stuitje (Lockport, N.Y.) recorded one save and his first career shutout in
only his second start. The Scarlet Hawk goalies had 10 combined saves.
ONU will be back in action on the road on Wednesday, Oct. 30,
at 3 p.m. against CCAC opponent Roosevelt University (Ill.).
