MACOMB, Ill. — From start to finish, the USTA/ITA NAIA Central-East Regional Championships were dominated by the Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team, which produced five of six bracket winners in the two-day event hosted by Olivet on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 21-22.
The Tigers competed against players from the University of St. Francis (Ill.), Ashford University (Iowa) and Roosevelt University (Ill.).
Senior Julian Kurz (Stuttgart, Germany) and Josue Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) won their respective singles’ brackets. Kurz went the distance in the A bracket and won four of eight sets 6-0. In the B bracket, Sanchez defeated two teammates to claim the title. In the semifinals, he beat Seth Perry (Jefferson, Ohio) (6-3, 6-3), and in the finals, he topped Addison Newell (Williamsport, Ind.) (6-2, 6-1).
Joe Badagliacco (Midlothian, Ill.) won the singles B consolation bracket after he beat teammate Mat Bowden (Spring Arbor, Mich.) (7-5, 7-6 (6)). Camilo Giraldo (Medellin, Colombia) won the Singles Main Draw Consolation bracket after closing out two of four sets 6-0.
The No. 1-seeded team of Kurz and Diego Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) won the doubles bracket by defeating two pairs of teammates. In the semifinals, they topped Newell and Sanchez 8-0. In the championship, they bested Giraldo and Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) 8-4.
Kurz advances in singles and doubles play along with Gonsalvez to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. on October 11-14, 2012.
ONU will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28-29, at the Valparaiso University (Ind.) Fall Invitational.
