VALPARAISO, Ill. — Up against stiff competition, the Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team competed at the Valparaiso University (Ind.) Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28-29. The Tigers competed against three different NCAA Division I teams and three from the NAIA.
In all, the tournament hosted six different brackets; three in singles and three in doubles play.
In singles, Senior Diego Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) finished third overall in the A Singles bracket winning (3-6, 6-1, 10-6) over a Chicago State University (Ill.) player. Camilo Giraldo (Medellin, Colombia) won the A Singles Back Draw Loser’s bracket consolation after falling in the A Singles bracket defeating Bunch from Western Illinois (6-4, 6-2). In B Singles Josue Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) finished second in the consolation portion of the bracket. Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) won B Singles Back Draw Loser’s bracket over Hart from Valparaiso (7-5, 7-5). Addison Newell (Williamsport, Ind.) won the consolation of the B Singles Back Draw after falling in the consolation bracket of B Singles. Seth Perry (Jefferson, Ohio) won the consolation side of the C Singles Back Draw (6-1, 6-2) over his teammate Jordan Lingle (Fishers, Ind.). Tim Thomas (Pontiac, Ill.) won the C Singles Back Draw consolation loser’s bracket portion.
In doubles, Sanchez and Newell finished fourth in B Doubles losing 8-5. Lingle and Mat Bowden (Spring Arbor, Mich.) finished sixth in the C Doubles bracket.
ONU will be back in action on Thursday through Sunday, October 11-14 for the USTA-ITA National Small College Championships, played at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
