Senior Diego Gonsalvez helped win his doubles match and narrowly lost his singles match on Wednesday against No. 24 Bethel (Tenn.)
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The undefeated No. 24-ranked Bethel University (Tenn.) Wildcats handed Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis its third straight loss on Wednesday by the score of 6-3. The Tigers have yet to win a match while in Florida but have two more tries this week.
ONU (3-5) won two tough singles matches against Bethel (Tenn.) (9-0). Senior (#9 ITA) Julian Kurz (Stuttgart, Germany) avenged a lost he had last year by winning his match (6-3, 6-1). Senior Diego Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) almost came back to win his match after trailing 4-0, but lost 6-2, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (6). Senior Camilo Giraldo (Medellin, Colombia) won his match (6-4, 6-4).
In doubles play, the number four ranked ITA team in the nation, Kurz and Gonsalvez, won 8-6. Giraldo and sophomore Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) lost a tough match 9-8 (6) after breaking Bethel's serve to force the tiebreak, and went on to have four more match points in the tiebreak.
The Tigers continue play in Florida on Thursday, March 7, with a match against No. 9 Aquinas University (Mich.) at 8 a.m. (EST).
