The ONU Men's Tennis team will play three nationally ranked opponents during its trip to Florida
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Up against their second straight nationally ranked opponent in two days, Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis played tough, losing only 6-3. The Tigers fought hard against the No. 9-ranked Aquinas Saints, as ONU almost swept doubles play and was in every singles match but one.
Against the No. 9 team in the nation, Aquinas (6-4), a resilient ONU (3-6) squad won only one singles match but battled to three sets in three others. Senior (#9 ITA) Julian Kurz (Stuttgart, Germany) was the lone winner going [7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2]. Senior Diego Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) lost [7-6 (5), 6-4] and senior Camilo Giraldo (Medellin, Colombia) only lost (4-6, 7-5, 6-0). Josue Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) lost in a close one [7-6 (5), 6-2], and Landon Williams (Erie, Penn.) lost in three sets (1-6, 7-5, 6-2).
The Tigers almost swept doubles play, as the number four ranked ITA team in the nation, Kurz and Gonsalvez, won 8-5. Giraldo and sophomore Landon Williams won 8-6, and Josue Sanchez and Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) lost 8-6.
The Tigers finish play in Florida on Saturday, March 9, against the No. 1 team in the NAIA, Embry-Riddle University (Fla.), at 10 a.m. (EST).
