JOLIET, Ill. — After 17 days off due to weather concerns and
cancellations, the No. 21-ranked Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team
took the court in their first conference match of the season. They traveled to
play the University of St. Francis (Ill.) but were unable to get back in the win
column, falling 5-4 to the Saints.
The Tigers (3-9) were without their number one singles
player Julian Kurz (Stuttgart, Germany),
but the team played tough without him. ONU managed two points in singles play. Senior Diego Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico)
won his match (6-2, 6-0). Senior Camilo
Giraldo (Medellin, Colombia) lost in a tough match [1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4)]. Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) won
over Diego Mogrovejo (6-4, 6-0).
The Tigers responded in doubles with two more points but
failed to get the most important fifth deciding point. Kurz and Gonsalvez lost
a tough number one doubles match 9-7. Giraldo and Landon Williams (Erie, Penn.) won 8-3, and Jensen and Seth Perry (Jefferson, Ohio) won 8-4.
ONU will be back on the court at home against Lewis University (Ill.) on Thursday, April 4, starting at 3:30 p.m.
