Landon Williams won both his matches as the Tigers beat Campbellsville 5-2 on Tuesday
MOBILE, Ala. — After dropping their first match in pool
play, the No. 21-ranked Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team needed a
win to keep their hopes of advancing alive. With a 5-2 win over the No. 22
Campbellsville University (Ky.) Tigers, ONU had a chance of moving into the
Campbellsville (9-11) dropped three of four singles’ matches
to the Tigers (11-11). Julian Kurz
(Stuttgart, Germany) lost (6-4, 6-1). Diego
Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) won against Sebastian Marot (6-2, 1-6, 6-2).
Landon Williams (Erie, Pa.) defeated
Pontus Blom (6-3, 6-4). Peter Jensen
(Yuba City, Calif.) defeated Tyler Hyatt (6-2, 6-1). Camilo Giraldo (Medellin, Colombia) and Josue Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) did not finish their matches.
In doubles, the Tigers were able to take two of three matches.
The No. 5-ranked ITA team of Julian Kurz and Diego Gonsalvez defeated Soriano
and Blom 8-4. Camilo Giraldo and Landon
Williams (Erie, Pa.) won 8-0, and Josue Sanchez and Peter Jensen lost 9-7
to Marot and Spalding.
ONU will finish pool play in the NCCAA National Tournament on
Wednesday, May 8 at 9 a.m. against Fresno Pacific University (Calif.).
