ONU was unable to advance to the semifinal round of the NCCAA National Tournament
MOBILE, Ala. — The No. 21-ranked Olivet Nazarene University
men’s tennis team needed a win over Fresno Pacific University (Calif.) on
Wednesday to advance to the semifinal round of the NCCAA National
Championships. With a 1-1 record in pool play, the Tigers would only move on
with a winning record. The Sunbirds weren’t willing to let ONU slip by, winning
6-0 and ending the Tigers' tournament play.
Against Fresno Pacific (19-7), the Tigers (11-12) were
unable to secure a point in singles play. The No. 13-ranked ITA player Kirill
Sinitsyn defeated Diego Gonsalvez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) (6-0, 6-0). Marco
Gabriel defeated Josue Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) (6-0, 6-0), and John Karlman
beat Mat Bowden (Spring Arbor, Mich.) (6-0, 6-0). Camilo Giraldo (Medellin,
Colombia), Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.), and Seth Perry (Jefferson, Ohio)
did not finish their matches.
In doubles, the Sunbirds took all three points from the
Tigers. The No. 5-ranked ITA team of Julian Kurz (Stuttgart, Germany) and Diego
Gonsalvez fell 8-4. Camilo Giraldo and Seth Perry lost 8-1, and Josue Sanchez
and Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) lost 8-1.
ONU will begin play in the NAIA National Tournament on
Tuesday, May 14, at 9 a.m. against No. 13 William Carey University (Miss.).
