Tigers perform well at Art Peterson Invite hosted by Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. — Freshman Oscar Mancineiras-Cornella (Lleida, Spain) led the way for the Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team at the Art Petersen Invitational, hosted by NCAA Division I Western Illinois University on Friday and Saturday, September 6 and 7.

Mancineiras-Cornella won the No. 2 singles bracket by topping opponents from Chicago State University (Ill.), University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Western Illinois (6-0, 6-3).

The Tigers also had three consolation winners. Juan Lopez-Isasi Morales (Madrid, Spain) (flight #3) won over Nadar Murad (6-1, 6-1) after losing his first round match. Caio Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) (flight #4) lost his first match but defeated opponents from Roosevelt University (Ill.) (6-1, 6-1) and Chicago State University (Ill.) (6-1, 6-3). Alef Guimaraes (Palmas, Brazil) (flight #6) responded after his first round loss to beat Luis Ulloa from Chicago State (6-0, 6-1) and Enric Noguera from Lindenwood University (Mo.) (6-1, 6-4).

Also in singles flight #1, Rodolfo Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) ended up as the consolation reprieve winner after losing in the second round to the eventual champion, Jake Humphreys (UW-W).

In doubles play, the pair of Mancineiras-Cornella and Lopez-Isasi Morales finished first in the consolation bracket (flight #1), beating the team from Lindenwood 8-6. Barros and Sanchez defeated Cederkall and Granger from Western Illinois to win the Semi Reprieve bracket for doubles flight #2. The Tigers’ Tyler Ellis (Danville, Ill.) and Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) defeated the Chicago State team to win the doubles flight #3 consolation. Riley St. Clair (Corona, Calif.) and Guimaraes won the championship of the doubles flight #4 over UW-W 8-3.

The Tigers will be back on the court for the USTA-ITA Central-East Regional in Springfield, Mo., September 13 to 15.
