LEBANON, Ill. — After starting the spring season last month, the Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team had to wait another three weeks to play again. However, it was worth it for the Tigers as they picked up their first win of the year in exciting fashion. Olivet defeated NCAA Division II opponent McKendree University (Ill.) 5-3. All but one singles match went to three sets and the No. 1 doubles match up went 17 games.

In singles, the Tigers (2-2) kept it close winning three of six matches. Navarro Veys (Mortsel, Belgium) defeated Luciano Misitrano  in the longest match of the day (6-1, 0-6, 14-12). Oscar Mancineiras (Lleida, Spain) came back after dropping the first set to beat Aleix Alvarez (4-6, 6-2, 10-3). Junior Landon Williams (Erie, Penn.) fell to Maximilian Ilic in the third straight three-set match of the contest (4-6, 6-3, 10-7).  Juan Morales (Madrid, Spain) won the Tigers’ third point over Blake Kebblewhite (6-0, 4-6, 10-5). Caio Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) dropped a tough point to Cameron Randall (4-6, 6-4, 10-8). Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) fell in back-to-back sets (7-6, 7-6) to even the match at 3-3.

With the match at three points apiece ONU closed the door with two early points in doubles play. The team of Veys and Williams took down Misitrano and Alvarez in an exciting match (9-8). Morales and Barros did not take long to win the fifth and deciding point against Randall and Leskera.  Mancineiras and Jensen’s match was not finished.

ONU will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Ferris State University (Ill.) at 10 a.m. (EST).
