GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Head Coach Chris Tudor had the Olivet
Nazarene University men’s tennis team on the road for the third time in two
weeks. On Thursday afternoon, Feb. 20, the Tigers were in Indiana to match up against NCAA
Division III DePauw University (Ind.). ONU gained three points and fell in
three other tough matches, falling 6-3.
In singles play, the Tigers (2-4) gained two points from the
play of Oscar Cornella (Lleida, Spain),
who defeated Sam Miles (6-2, 6-4). Landon
Williams (Erie, Penn.) beat Patrick Farrell (6-3, 6-3) for the Tigers
second point. Navarro Veys (Mortsel,
Belgium) dropped the No. 1 match to Ben Kopecky (6-2, 7-5). Juan Morales (Madrid, Spain) lost to
Alec Kaczkowski in a great three set match (6-2, 3-6, 6-1).
Caio Barros (Belo
Horizonte, Brazil) took his first set over Nick Thompson, but dropped the
last two to give DePauw (2-1) the win (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). Peter Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) lost to Matt Santen in the sixth singles match up of the day (6-1, 7-5).
The Tigers needed all three points in doubles play in order
to take the match, but were unable to clinch it, taking only one point when
Williams and Veys beat Kopecky and Miles 8-5. Morales and Barros fell to Eric
Vannatta and Alec Kaczkowski 8-2, and Cornella and Jensen dropped a very close
match to Thompson and Farrel 9-8 (7-3).
ONU will be back in action Friday, Feb. 21, at home against the
University of Northwestern Ohio at 12 p.m.
