BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — On Friday, Feb. 21, the Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team competed against No. 16 University of Northwestern Ohio on home turf. In their second straight day of competition, the Tigers suffered their closest defeat this season, losing 5-4 in a match that featured
three matches that went extra sets.
Olivet (2-5) split the six singles matches of the day,
starting with a win by Oscar Cornella
(Lleida, Spain), who defeated Emin Alpan (6-0, 6-1). Juan Morales (Madrid, Spain) gained a second point with a win over
Gabriel Cleto, the match lasted 35 extra points after they split the first two
sets (2-6, 6-1, 19-16). Caio Barros
(Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also went an extra set when he defeated Michael
Kock (4-6, 6-1, 10-6).
(Erie, Penn.) lost to Ronnie Myburgh (6-4, 7-5), and No. 1 Navarro Veys (Mortsel, Belgium) dropped
his match to Daniel Rueda (6-4, 7-5). In his first match of the spring, Rodolfo Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) lost
to Thommy Johansson (6-3, 6-1).
In order to take the match, the Tigers needed two points in
doubles play, but only managed one, taking the Veys and Cornella over Kock and
Cleto match (9-8, (7-3)). Morales and Barros fell to Alpan and Myburgh 8-3. Williams
and Sanchez dropped the No. 1 match to Rueda and Johansson 8-6.
ONU will be back in action Tuesday, March 11, against No. 19
Warner University (Fla.) at Hillsborough Community College (Fla.) at 5 p.m.
