MOBILE, Alabama — In his first NAIA National Tournament as a head coach, Chris Tudor led the No. 23-ranked Olivet Nazarene University men’s tennis team into their 12th consecutive nationals appearance. The Tigers were matched up with No. 16 College of Coastal Georgia in first round action on Tuesday, May 13. Both teams came into Tuesday’s action with 12-7 records and would get an opportunity to play No. 1 Embry-Riddle University (Florida) with a win. ONU fell 5-4 to the Mariners after leading 3-0 after doubles action.

The top 25-ranked Tigers' (12-8) 10th straight win was in reach following three solid doubles matches and three victories. Landon Williams (Erie, Pennsylvania) and Rodolfo Sanchez (Morelia, Mexico) defeated Louis Volclair and Jose Zaatini 9-8. In the No. 2 doubles match, Caio Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Juan Morales (Madrid, Spain) beat Rhan Burton and Alejandro Aquilino 8-4. Navarro Veys (Mortsel, Belgium) and Oscar Cornella (Lleida, Spain) defeated Robin Lucas and Erick Bermudez 8-4.

In singles play, the Tigers claimed only one point, one short necessary to move on to the second round. No. 1 Veys fell to Louis Volclair (6-2, 4-6, 6-3). No. 2 Cornella lost to No. 2 Jose Zaatini (6-3, 6-2). No. 3 Rodolfo Sanchez lost a point to Erick Bermudez (6-3, 6-0).

No. 5 Juan Morales lost to Rhan Burton (7-5, 6-2), and No. 6 Barros gained the Tigers' lone singles point (6-0, 6-1) against Leif Shuman (6-0, 6-1). No. 4 Williams lost to Malhar Mali (6-2, 1-6, 6-4) in the deciding match.

The Tigers' loss ends the career of Landon Williams. He will forego his fourth year of eligibility.
