BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Friday, January 25, was a historic day for the ONU track and field team as it hosted its very first indoor meet at the new Student Life and Recreation Center on Olivet’s campus. ONU hosted the NAIA/NCAA D3 Challenge and had eight teams, four that represented the NAIA and four more from NCAA Division III. The event was over two days and was not scored.
The schools that represented the NAIA were ONU, Bethel College (Ind.), Aquinas College (Mich.) and St. Ambrose University (Iowa). The Division III schools were Calvin College (Mich.), Augustana College (Ill.), Greenville College (Ill.) and Benedictine University (Ill.).
The Tigers won six events throughout the weekend, while sophomore Elisha DeRamus (Harvey, Ill.) broke three school records and qualified for the national meet in two events (long jump and triple jump). He won the long jump with a finish of 7.42m, came in second in the triple jump with a mark of 14.43m, and helped the 4x200m relay win with a time of 1:31.93, all for school records.
Junior Ethan Gallagher (Parsippany, N.J.) got the Tigers started with a win in the one mile run (4:17.73). In the 800 meter run, junior Brian Willoughby (Elkhart, Ind.) took third with a time of 1:58.85. Sophomore Jared Carl (Galesburg, Ill.) finished fourth in the 200 meter dash (22.79), and senior Ty’Rel Fields (Huntsville, Ala.) finished fifth in the 400 meter dash (50.94). Sophomore Marshall Hawn (Goshen, Ind.) took fourth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:02.50.
The Tigers ran three relays, winning the 4x200 meter relay with the team of Elisha DeRamus and Jared Carl, junior Rey Keys (Matteson, Ill.) and freshman Jonathan Hutchinson (Morton, Ill.). The 4x800 meter relay won with a time of 7:51.93 and was run by Brian Willoughby, sophomore David Powers (Security, Colo.), Marshall Hawn and Ethan Gallagher. The 4x400 meter relay came in second behind Augustana with a time of 3:24.70. Sophomore Sam Willis (Freeport, Ill.), junior Ross Johnson (Newton, Ill.), Rey Keys and Ty’Rel Fields ran the 4x800m for ONU.
Among the top finishers in field events, sophomore Lucas Limberg (Rockford, Ill.) finished second in the high jump with a leap of 1.96m. Sophomore Brian Michell (Reed City, Mich.) won the pole vault for the Tigers with a mark of 4.75m. Senior standout Joe Reisinger (Georgetown, Ill.) won the shot put (16.62m) and placed second in the weight throw (16.69m). Junior Sam Pimpo (Antioch, Ill.) finished fourth in the heptathlon with 4,004 points, competing in seven different events.
ONU will be back in action on Saturday, February 2, at Indiana Wesleyan University.
