Tigers send five to nationals in first weekend of indoor competition

ALLENDALE, Mich./WHITEWATER, Wis. — In only the first weekend of the indoor season for the Olivet Nazarene University men’s track and field team, five athletes have qualified for the NAIA National Meet. The Tigers competed in two different meets as a split squad. On Friday, Jan. 17, ONU was at the Mike Lints Open, hosted by Grand Valley State University (Mich.). On Saturday, Jan. 18, the team was at the Karl Schlender Invitational, hosted by UW-Whitewater. ONU finished sixth of 21 teams at the Mike Lints Open, scoring 39.5 points; and third of six teams at the Karl Schlender Invite, scoring 67 points.

On Friday evening, four Tigers qualified for the national indoor meet in February 2014. Senior Ethan Gallagher (Parsippany, N.J.) broke the school record and qualified in the mile run with a time of 4:13.83. He finished third. Senior Ty’rel Field (Huntsville, Ala.) qualified “B” standard in the 400m run with a time of 49.24, finishing sixth. Senior Mitchell Dale (Rochester Mills, Mich.) qualified “A” standard with a 12th-place finish and 8:38.39 finish in the 3000 meter run. Freshman Zach Gordon (Carol Stream, Ill.) qualified “B” standard in the long jump with a mark of 7.06m.

At the Mike Lints Open, there were several other outstanding finishes. Gordon finished 12th in the 200 meter run with a time of 22.44. Junior David Powers (Security, Colo.) came in 10th in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:24.09. Junior Lucas Limberg (Rockford, Ill.) came in third in the high jump with a mark of 1.92m. Junior Brian Michell (Reed City, Mich.) won the pole vault with a final mark of 4.65m. Sophomore Elisha DeRamus (Harvey, Ill.) came in third in the long jump with a finish of 6.94m. Junior Jared Carl (Galesburg, Ill.) finished 24th in the 60 meter dash (7.21).

At the Karl Schlender Invite, sophomore Jacob Armbrust (Metamora, Ill.) won the shot put with a throw of 15.84m, qualifying “A” standard. Senior Seth Wonch (Olathe, Kan.) came in second in the weight throw with a mark of 14.67m. Christopher Aschemann (Carterville, Ill.) finished third with a mark of 13.45m and came in third in the shot put (13.93m). Sophomore Noah Ballweg (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) finished third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.91. Sophomore Matthew Dixon (Chebanse, Ill.) came in third with a time of 4:48.93. Freshman Alex Hunt (Eureka, Ill.) finished second in the 400 meter dash (53.26). Junior Joel Lynn (Naperville, Ill.) won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:02.61.

ONU will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24 and 25, at the NAIA/NCAA Challenge at home, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday.
