Tigers finish impressive spring trip; Gardner finishes strong

TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior Hannah Gardner (Frankfort, Ill.) finished the No. 12 Olivet Nazarene University’s spring break trip the Tucson Invitational up with a bang. On Saturday, March 9, the last of the six-days of competition, Gardner went 5-for-8 from the plate, including a grand slam, nine RBI’s and six runs scored. She helped lead the Tigers (13-1) to five-inning wins over Dickinson State University (N.D.) and Arizona Christian University.
In the opener against Dickinson, the Tigers won 9-0, putting together nine hits. Junior Justine Phillips (Metamora, Ill.) and Gardner both finished the game going 2-for-4. Phillips connected for a double and a triple, while scoring three runs. Gardner added two singles, two runs scored and two RBI’s. On the mound, sophomore Lindsay Stotler (Bloomington, Ill.) picked up her fourth win of the season, allowing just three hits.
In the nightcap, Gardner was a single shy of hitting for the cycle. She connected for a double and a triple in the second inning and added a grand slam in the third, finishing the game with seven RBI’s and four runs scored. The Firestorm finally managed to get her out in the final at-bat of the day. Phillips added three singles and three runs scored. Junior Caitlin Santefort (Mokena) picked up her team-leading fifth win of the season on the mound for the Tigers. She finished with six strike outs, one walk and allowed just one hit.
The Tigers are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 14 when they travel to Bethel College (Ind.) for a 3:00 p.m. (EST) double header. The Pilots are coached by Olivet alma and former assistant coach Megan Smalley. The Pilots are currently 6-0 on the season.
