BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Junior Hannah Gardner (Frankfort, Ill.) went 5-for-8 at the plate on Thursday, April 25 to lead the No. 16 Olivet Nazarene University softball team to a sweep of Robert Morris University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action. The impressive showing extends Gardner’s hit streak to 25 games and her reached base streak to 50, both are school record.
Game one of the afternoon was the completion of a game suspended for rain on April 17. The Tigers (41-5, 16-2) picked up in the bottom of the fourth inning with the bases loaded and a 4-0 lead. Three innings later, Olivet had picked up a 6-0 victory. Gardner and junior Justine Phillips (Metamora, Ill.) both connected for three hits each, one of Phillips’ being her second home run of the season. Sophomore Rachel Holaway (Wheaton, Ill.) also added a home run, her first of the season.
Junior Caitlin Santefort (Mokena, Ill.) pitched a complete game, improving her record to 15-1 on the season. She allowed just four hits while striking out three.
In the night cap, the Tigers held on to a 2-1 lead before breaking the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Gardner, sophomore Megan Butler (Frankfort, Ill.) and freshman Katie Megyesi (Washington, Ill.) each contributed two hits to the win. Junior Virginia McAndrews (Wheaton, Ill.) pitched six innings to pick up her 13th win on the season, allowing just three hits.
Olivet returns to action at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 as they resume another suspended game, this time with Trinity International University (Ill.). The Tigers have a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Game two of the match-up will follow.
