BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The No. 11 Olivet Nazarene University
softball team picked up two wins in the weather shortened ONU Invite on
Saturday, March 29. The Tigers downed Purdue University – Calumet (Ind.) 2-0
before beating Robert Morris University (Ill.) 8-0 in five innings behind the
strong pitching arms of seniors Caitlin Santefort (Mokena, Ill.) and Virginia
McAndrews (Wheaton, Ill.).
In the opener, Santefort went the distance to pick up her
sixth win of the season. She allowed just three hits in seven innings, while
striking out five and allowing five walks. Offensively, the Tigers were held to
just four hits. Sophomore Katie Megyesi (Washington, Ill.) connected for a
double, while seniors Hannah Gardner (Frankfort, Ill.) and Cheryl Sendzik
(Mokena, Ill.) and junior Megan Butler (Frankfort, Ill.) each added a single.
In the night cap, McAndrews improved to 5-0 on the season,
throwing all five innings. She allowed just two hits and struck out four, while
allowing just one walk. The bats woke up as the Tiger’s connected for 12 hits. Gardner
connected for two doubles, while junior Erika Tatum (Bourbonnais, Ill.) added
one. Sophomore Lindsey Krippel (Fairbury, Ill.) added a triple, while junior
Jordy Truelock (Princeton, Ill.) added three singles. Sendzik went 2-for-3 with
a team-leading three RBIs.
Olivet (14-2) will open Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic
Conference play on Tuesday, April 1 at the University of St. Francis (Ill.). Game
one is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. The Tigers swept the Fighting Saints in
their three contests a season ago, including knocking them out of the CCAC
Tournament with a 10-2 win.
