BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team picked a great night play together as a team and show the consistency that head coach Brenda Williams has been looking for. With over 100 pink-clad fans in the stands for the annual Dig Pink Match, the Tigers dropped Indiana University-South Bend in four sets, 25-16, 17-25, 25-19, 25-17.
It was a win-win night for Olivet as they also were able to raise hundreds of dollars to donate to help with breast cancer awareness through the Side-Out Foundation.
Olivet (8-25, 7-7) finished the night with 53 kills to just 38 by the Titans, and a team attack percentage of .218. Senior Katherine Hozian (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) led the offensive attack with 19 kills in 44 attempts with just one error (.409). Freshman Becky DeRuiter (Chicago Ridge, Ill.) added 15 kills. Freshman setter Renee Enz (Wilmington, Ill.) finished with 40 assist, more than IU-South Bend had as a team.
The Tiger defense combined for 79 digs, with five players finishing in double-digits. Sophomore Haley Hatalla (Manteno, Ill.) contributed 19, while Hozian and Enz added 14 each. Freshmen Melissa Bartholomew (Newton, Iowa) and Carly Wenzelman (Bonfield, Ill.) added 11 and 10, respectively.
Olivet will participate in a CCAC Crossover Tournament in South Bend starting on Friday, Oct. 26. The Tigers will face Roosevelt University (Ill.) at 5 p.m. and St. Xavier University (Ill.) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Olivet will face Robert Morris University (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and Trinity International University (Ill.) at 2 p.m.
