SOUTH BEND, Ind. – It was another up and down weekend for the Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletics Conference Crossover Tournament hosted by Indiana University-South Bend on Oct. 26 and 27. The Tigers opened up play with a 5-set win over Roosevelt University (Ill.), before falling to St. Xavier University (Ill.) in the night cap on Friday. Saturday morning, they dropped a four-set match to Robert Morris University (Ill.) and easily took a three-set match from Trinity International University.
The Tigers (10-27, 9-9) outlasted the Lakers in the opening match which lasted almost two and a half hours, winning 32-34, 25-22, 25-14, 32-34, 15-10. Freshman Becky DeRuiter (Chicago Heights, Ill.) finished the match with 20 kills, while senior Katherine Hozian (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) added 15. Senior Carolyn Goettsch (Utica, Mich.) and sophomore Kaia Lenzi (Beach Park, Ill.) contributed 12 and 10, respectively. Freshman setter Renee Enz (Wilmington, Ill.) finished with 55 assists. The Tigers finished with 81 digs, led by sophomore Haley Hatalla (20), Hozian (16), freshman Carly Wenzelman (13) and Enz (10).
Just a half an hour after the end of the opening match, the Tigers faced CCAC leading St. Xavier. The Tigers had run out of steam, losing 25-20, 25-10, 25-23. Olivet finished the match with just 32 kills, led by DeRuiter’s 11. Enz ended with 23 assists and Hatalla (Manteno, Ill.) added 13 digs.
Hozian added another 23 kills in 55 attempts for an attack percentage of .345 in the Saturday morning match with Robert Morris, but the Tigers fell 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23. Enz added another 35 assists and 11 digs. DeRuiter finished with 11 kills, while Hatalla added 15 digs. Goettsch added six blocks.
The Tigers finished the weekend with a 25-15, 25-17, 26-24 win over Trinity International. Hozian remained hot, leading with 10 kills. Enz finished with 28 digs, while Hatalla added 20 digs.
Olivet will play its final home match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30 against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The Tigers will recognize their two seniors, Hozian and Goettsch, before the match.
