WASHINGTON, Ill. – Washington Community High School standout Courtney Spurgeon has signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball playing career and education at Olivet Nazarene University. Spurgeon will join the inaugural junior varsity team in the fall of 2013.
Spurgeon, a 5-9 defensive specialist/libero, helped lead the Panthers to a 50-20 record in her two-year varsity career. As a junior, she set a new school record for most service points scored in a match with 27. Her senior year, she set new school record in career digs (610) and digs in a single season (330). She was named all-conference second team in the Mid-Illini Conference in 2012.
“It started my fall semester of my junior year when I received a letter of interest from the volleyball program. I started to look into ONU and took a tour of the campus,” said Spurgeon about her decision. “As soon as I stepped into the campus, I knew it was the place for me. I know that ONU will educate me scholastically as well as teach me to take Christ into the working world.”
Quite active in high school, Spurgeon is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Key Club, and Young Life. She was also a varsity letter winner in track as a freshman and sophomore.
Spurgeon maintains a 4.43 grade point average in high school and is a member of National Honor Society (NHS). She intends to major in biology/pre-veterinarian while at Olivet.
“I love the fact it is education with a Christian purpose. I have a passion to grow in my faith as well as preparing myself for the future in my occupation,” she continued.
