UPLAND/MARION, Ind. – The Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team returned home from the Taylor University/Indiana Wesleyan University Cross-Over Tournament disappointed with their 1-3 performance. The Tigers show signs of improvement, but are still lacking the fire to finish things off.

“We have to get on the same page at the same time,” commented head coach Brenda Williams. “The three freshman are doing good things for us right now.”

Olivet (2-6) started things off with a close loss to Marian University (Ind.), falling in five sets (19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 15-13). Senior McKenzie Thompson (Plano, Texas) finished with an impressive 20 kills in 49 attempts (.286) and added 15 digs. Junior Heidi Schoenbein (Morton, Ill.) also added 11 kills in 31 attempts (.258). Freshman setter Katie Tabisz (Lockport, Ill.) dished out 30 assists, while sophomore setter Renee Enz (Wilmington, Ill.) added 19.

The Tigers took on Taylor University (Ind.) next, falling in straight sets (18-25, 23-25, 24-26). Olivet struggled, finishing as a team with an attack percentage of .082 and seven service errors. Thompson finished with seven kills, but struggled with six errors. Juniors Kaia Lenzi (Beach Park, Ill.) and Tiffany Madura (Munster, Ind.) finished with six and five kills, respectively. Junior libero Haley Hatalla (Manteno, Ill.) added 17 digs on defense.

On day two, the Tigers showed definite signs of improved consistency, winning the opening match with Indiana Institute of Technology 3-1 (25-23, 15-25, 27-25, 27-25). Sophomore Becky DeRuiter (Chicago Heights, Ill.) ended with 16 kills with just three hitting errors in 25 attempts (.520), while Schoenbein continued to dominate at the net adding 13 kills with one error in 27 attempts (.444). Enz finished with 24 assists and Tabisz with 21.

In the final match of the weekend, Olivet took Texas Wesleyan University to five sets (24-262, 25-20, 131-25, 25-15, 15-10), but couldn’t hold on. The Tigers jumped to an early 5-1 lead in the deciding set, but were then outscored 14-5. DeRuiter added another 15 kills and five blocks, while Thompson finished with 11 kills. Hatalla also provided 20 digs. Tabisz and Enz finished with 23 and 19 assists, respectively.

Olivet will return to action on Sept. 6-7 at the Viterbo University Tournament in LaCrosse, Wis. On Friday, the Tigers will face Clarke University (Iowa) at 3 p.m. and Dakota Wesleyan University (N.D.) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Olivet will take on Hannibal-LaGrange University (Mo.) at 11 a.m. and No. 15 Viterbo University (Wis.) at 1 p.m.
