Tigers pick up CCAC win over Purdue-North Central

LA PORTE, Ind. – Senior McKenzie Thompson (Plano, Texas) and junior Heidi Schoenbein (Morton, Ill.) combined for 35 kills and an attack percentage of .530 to lead the Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team to a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Purdue University- North Central (Ind.) on Tuesday, Sept. 17. The Tigers needed five sets to pick up their first conference win, but got the job done despite dropping the opening two set (23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-13, 15-11).
Thompson finished the night with 21 kills in 36 attempts with just three errors (.500) while adding three service aces and 10 digs. She also assisted in three blocks. Schoenbein added 14 kills with no errors in 15 attempts (.560). Freshman Katie Tabisz (Lockport, Ill.) led with 32 assists, while also adding nine kills. Sophomore Renee Enz (Wilmington, Ill.) also added 22 assists on the night.
“A win is a win,” stated Head Coach Brenda Williams after the match. “We started really slow, then picked it up. Everyone contritributed, but Kenzie (Thompson) and Heidi (Schoenbein) did really well tonight. It was great to see Tiff (Madura) get in and start blocking too.”
Madura (Munster, Ind.), a junior, finished the evening with a team-high seven blocks. Junior libero Haley Hatalla (Manteno, Ill.) also added 17 digs on defense.
Olivet (5-9, 1-1) will return to action as they host the Holiday Inn Express Classic on Sept. 20-21. The Classic brings 12 teams to town, including several nationally ranked programs. Olivet will take on Davenport University (Mich.) at 4:00 p.m. and Indiana Tech at 8 on Friday. The Tigers will face No. 7 Georgetown College (Ky.) at 10:00 a.m. Saturday and close out the tournament at 4:00 p.m. against RV Indiana University – East.
