Olivet returns to home court, finishes even

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – After 28 days and 14 matches, the Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team finally played a match on their home court in McHie Arena. The Tigers played host to 11 teams from across the Midwest in the Holiday Inn Express Classic on Sept. 20-21. Playing in front of their home fans, the Tigers finished the weekend 2-2.

Olivet (7-11) started the weekend with a tough Davenport University (Mich.) team, falling in straight sets (19-25, 30-32, 19-25). The Tigers played with a lot of passion, but struggled to control their emotions in front of nearly 250 fans. Senior McKenzie Thompson (Plano, Texas) led the offense with eight kills, while freshman Katie Tabisz (Lockport, Ill.) and junior Tiffany Madura (Munster, Ind.) added six each. Tabisz also added 16 assists.

The Tigers found the win column with a three-set (26-24, 25-14, 25-19) victory over Indiana Tech in their second match of the day. Junior Kaia Lenzi (Beach Park, Ill.) had an impressive outing, finishing with 11 kills in 18 attempts with no hitting errors (.611). She also added three blocks. Tabisz dished out 21 assists, while junior libero Haley Hatalla (Manteno, Ill.) added 16 digs.

First things Saturday morning the Tigers faced off with No. 8 Georgetown College (Ky.). Olivet pounced first coming up with a 25-16 opening set win before falling 23-25, 24-26, 19-25. Thompson finished with 11 kills, while Tabisz added nine plus 22 assists, three service aces and 10 digs.

The Tigers finished the weekend with a five-set, grueling match with Indiana University-East, winning 22-25, 25-14, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9. Lenzi, sophomore Becky DeRuiter (Chicago Heights, Ill.) and junior Heidi Schoenbein (Morton, Ill.) combined for 40 kills, finishing with 15, 14 and 11 respectively. Tabisz dished out 27 assists, while senior Rachel Raynor (DeKalb, Ill.) and Schoenbein added three service aces each.

For her efforts on the weekend, Tabisz was named to the All-Tournament team. She finished the weekend with 18 kills, 86 assists, eight service aces 27 digs and five blocks.

Olivet will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. as they take on Purdue University-Calumet in McHie Arena. The Tigers swept the two-match series last season, defeating the Peregrine in straight sets on Sept. 18 and Oct. 16.
