BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – On one hand the Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team’s match with Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on Tuesday, Oct. 15 was a huge success…on the other had it was disappointing end to what had become the team’s longest winning streak in several seasons. On the bright side, the Tigers hosted their annual Dig Pink fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and came away from the night far exceeding their goal of $1,500. Unfortunately, they also saw their nine-match winning streak come to an end as they struggled to put things together against the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference top-ranked Trolls, falling in straight sets 23-25, 16-25, 13-25.
Olivet (15-12, 9-2) finished with an attack percentage of a mere .022, with 27 kills to 25 errors in 89 attempts. Sophomore Becky DeRuiter (Chicago Heights, Ill.) led the Tigers with eight kills, while juniors Heidi Schoenbein (Morton, Ill.) and Kaia Lenzi (Beach Park, Ill.) each added five. The setting duo of sophomore Renee Enz (Wilmington, Ill.) and freshman Katie Tabisz (Lockport, Ill.) dished out 12 and 15 assists respectively.
Olivet will head to Des Moines, Iowa for the two-day Grand View University Invite beginning on Friday, Oct. 18. The Tigers will face stiff competition as three of the four matches will be against teams being recognized in the NAIA Coaches Poll. On Friday, the Tigers will face Viterbo University (Wis.) at 2, before taking on No. 19 Grand View at 6 p.m. Saturday they will face Ashford University (Iowa) at 10:00 a.m. and finish with the University of Jamestown (N.D.). VIterbo and Jamestown are both receiving votes in the national poll.
