SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Sophomore Becky DeRuiter (Chicago Heights, Ill.) had a career-high 22 kills to lead the No. 5 seeded Olivet Nazarene University volleyball to a 3-2 upset of No.4 seeded Indiana University-South Bend in the quarterfinals of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The win advances the Tigers to the semifinals to face No. 1 seeded Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on Thursday.
In her 41 attack attempts, DeRuiter had just seven errors (.366). She also added five blocks, second on the team. Senior Katelyn Miller (Avon, Ind.) added 19 kills, while senior McKenzie Thompson (Plano, Texas) and junior Kaia Lenzi, (Beach Park, Ill.) added nine each. Lenzi also led the team with eight blocks.
The Tigers (21-19) normally run a 6-2 offense, were down to one setter when freshman Katie Tabisz (Lockport, Ill.) when down early in the match with an injury. Sophomore Renee Enz (Wilmington, Ill.) stepped up to run the offense solo, finishing with a season-high 50 assists plus four blocks.
Olivet will travel to Palos Heights, Ill. on Thursday, Nov. 14 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Trinity Christian. The Trolls won the CCAC Regular Season title with a 17-1 record. The Trolls won both earlier meetings between the two teams, defeating the Tigers in straight sets on Sept. 12 and again on Oct. 15.
