BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – A sigh of relief could be heard coming from McHie Arena as the Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team dropped a weight off of their shoulders. The Tigers picked up just their second win of the season on Thursday, Sept. 6, beating Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) in straight sets-25-20, 25-17, 25-18.
Olivet (2-7, 1-1) started the 2012 season with a tough schedule, playing five teams ranked in the top 12 of the NAIA in their first seven matches. Couple this with a young team, only two seniors, and you’re bound to struggle a little.
The Tigers showed that they had learned a lot from playing this strong schedule and were finally putting things together as a team.
“A win is a win, we are just glad we got one,” commented head coach Brenda Williams after the match. “I think our back court defense really stepped up tonight, we passed really well and dug a lot of balls.”
“Haley Hatalla (Manteno, Ill.) led with 13 digs, Kenzie Thompson (Plano, Texas) added ten and setter Renee Enz (Wilmington, Ill.) added nine digs. Our passing was much improved due to our communication and teamwork.”
Freshman Becky DeRuiter (Chicago Heights, Ill.) led the team with 11 kills, while seniors Katherine Hozian (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) added seven and Caroline Goettsch (Utica, Mich.) added six. Enz finished with 26 assists.
“Becky is still learning the outside hitter position, but she continues to improve. Tonight she led all hitters with 11 kills on 22 attempts for a .318 percentage, plus six digs and three blocks,” added Williams.
“We just need to keep working on consistency.”
Olivet returns to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 11 to take on the University of St. Francis at 7p.m.
