BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The No. 12 Olivet Nazarene University women’s basketball team captured the title of the Holiday Inn Express Classic on Saturday, Dec. 8 holding off a feisty St. Catharine College (Ky.) team to win 99-90. The Tigers, who were up by 26 points with 8:45 left in the game, allowed the Patriots to get to within six with 43 seconds remaining before sealing the win with free throws by junior Miranda Geever and senior Sandy Cabadas.
The Tigers (9-1) were led by sophomore Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich.) who finished the night with 14 points. Geever (Moline, Ill.) was right behind with 13 points and added four rebounds and three assists. Senior Danielle Tolbert (Pontiac, Mich.) ended the game with 12 points, while freshman Cortney Allenbaugh (Morton, Ill.) added 10.
“St. Catharine is a solid program,” commented head coach Lauren Stamatis. “We talked to the girls about the importance of getting on the boards since we hadn’t met our goal the past several games. We finally did that this game, which made a big difference when we weren’t making shots near the end.”
Cabadas (Aurora, Ill.) led Olivet with seven rebounds, adding four points and two assists. Junior Malory Adams (Aurora, Ill.) added six boards and two each of assists, blocks and steals.
Wilson, who finished the weekend with 33 points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals, was named the Classic MVP. Geever was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance. She ended the weekend with 11 assists and 18 points.
Olivet will host a free Community Night as the Tigers return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 taking on Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up.
