BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Two of the top-20 NAIA Division II women’s basketball teams faced off on Saturday, Dec. 1 with the No. 12 Olivet Nazarene University Tigers holding on for a 90-79 win over No. 16 Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The win puts the Tigers in a three-way tie at the top of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings.
Olivet (6-1, 6-1) started out strong, entering the half with a 52-36 lead. But the Tigers have struggled lately with finishing the same way with the Wolves outscoring the Tigers 43-38 in the second half.
“We knew Cardinal Stritch would be a tough opponent,” said head coach Lauren Stamatis. “It was a physical game and they played a nice second half, but we were able to hold on to the lead.”
Junior Liz Bart (Cary, Ill.) and sophomore Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich.) led Olivet with 15 points apiece. Bart finished the night 5-of-10 from behind the arch. Wilson finished 5-of-6 in field goal attempts and 5-of-9 at the stripe. She also added nine rebounds.
Junior Miranda Geever (Moline, Ill.) and senior Danielle Tolbert each finished with 13 points. Sophomore Bridgette Jones (Seymour, Ind.) pulled in nine rebounds, while senior Sandy Cabadas (Aurora, Ill.) added four blocks.
Olivet will play Illinois Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4. The two teams faced each other on Dec. 12, 2011 in Bloomington with Illinois Wesleyan winning 126-98.
