BELLVILLE, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University women’s basketball team picked up their first win of the 2013-14 season with a monstrous 138-118 advantage over Lindenwood University – Belleville on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Not only did the two teams set a new NAIA DII record for combined points scored with 256, but the Tigers shattered the record for points scored in a half when they posted 91 in the opening period.
The Tigers (1-2) started the game like they do many times, with senior Malory Adam (Aurora, Ill.) hitting a three-point off the opening tip. From there, the Tigers went on a scoring terror taking a 91-63 lead into the half. The Linx kept things much closer in the second half, actually outscoring the Tigers 55-47, but it was too little too late.
Senior Liz Bart (Cary, Ill.) led Olivet with 24 points, hitting 9-of-17 from the field including six threes. Senior Miranda Geever (Moline, Ill.) was not far behind with 19 points, plus seven steals and five assists. Sophomores Cortney Allenbaugh (Morton, Ill.), Jayne Stuart (Jackson, Mich.) and Adam all added double-digit scoring performances. Allenbaugh finished with 17 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Stuart added 16 points including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Adam finished with 15 points, six steals and four rebounds.
The Tigers broke their own record for combined points, originally set on Feb. 24, 2007 when they posted 249 points with Robert Morris University (Ill.). The 91 points in a half breaks a long-standing Oklahoma Baptist University record of 89 set against Southwest Adventist (Texas) on Nov. 4, 1995.
Olivet returns to action on Friday, Nov. 8 when they take on No. 4 University of St. Francis (Ind.) as the home opener and Homecoming kick-off. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
