HAMMOND, Ind. -- After two amazing victories in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament, the Olivet Nazarene University women’s basketball team were at the doorstep of winning the title. On Saturday, Mar. 3, the Tigers found the one team standing between them and a championship, No. 15 Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.). The Peregrines have become quite the nemesis of the Tigers, winning three of the last four match-ups including knocking the Tigers out of last year’s tournament in the quarterfinals. Both teams dueled it out on defense, but in the end the Peregrine made just a few more baskets, picking up the 87-77 win and putting an end to the Tigers fantastic tournament run.
Olivet (22-10) was led by senior Miranda Geever (Moline, Ill.) with 25 points and four steals. Geever finished an astounding tournament performance averaging 25.3 points per game, 1.33 points per minute of play. Senior Malory Adam (Aurora, Ill.) posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, she also added two blocks. Senior Taylor Haymes (Wentzville, Mo.) tallied 12 points, four rebounds, and two steals, while sophomore Holly Carter (Pueblo, Colo.) added 11 points and three steals. Also, freshman Sarah Kearney (Monroeville N.J.) played some great defense by grabbing eight defensive rebounds and blocked team-high four shots.
Purdue-Calumet's Tierra Turner and Cassidy Deno both posted double-doubles. Turner had 30 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, while Cassidy Deno recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tigers earned an automatic bid to the 23rd Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship held at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa from March 12-18, 2014. Olivet will learn their opening round opponent on Wednesday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m.
