BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The No. 3 Olivet Nazarene University women’s cross country team picked up right where they left off last season. The Tigers captured first place in their own Midwest Classic held at Aspen Ridge Golf Course on Friday, Sept. 6. Sophomore Bethany Pilat (Livonia, Mich.) was the top individual finisher, placing third overall.
The Tigers posted a top-five finishers time of 1:36:14.78, averaging 19:14.96 in the 10 team, 150 participant field. Taylor University (Ind.) finished second at 1:36:51.93, while Indiana Institute of Technology finished third at 1:40:42.27.
Pilat finished the race at 18:55.32, shaving four second off of her personal best. Freshman Elizabeth Soper (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished fourth overall in her first collegiate race with a time of 19:08.87, also a personal best. Senior Becca Garst (Peotone, Ill.) finished eighth with a time of 19:19.60, while junior Leah Livingston (Gibson City, Ill.) posted a time of 19:21.77 for ninth place. Rounding out the top five was senior Christy Trank (Winnebago, Ill.) in 11th place with a time of 19:29.22.
“Our 3rd through 6th runners packed it in nicely,” said assistant coach Kyle Rago. “We've got a couple girls banged up right now but we had people step up and fill in.”
The Tigers will host the Illinois Intercollegiate Invite on Friday, Sept. 13 at Aspen Ridge. The larger, stronger field will be a great test for the nationally ranked Tiger women. The race is set to start at 5p.m.
