BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – It was the perfect day for the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championship on Friday, Sept. 13 at Aspen Ridge Golf Course: sunny, cool and a slight breeze. The No. 3 Olivet Nazarene University women’s cross country team took full advantage, placing their top five runners in the top-34, finishing third overall in the 15 team field.
The Tigers found themselves behind two NCAA powerhouse programs. Division III University of Chicago captured the overall title followed by Division II Lewis University (Ill.). Rounding out the top five team finishes were Augustana College (Ill.) and Aurora University.
Olivet was led by sophomore Bethany Pilat (Livonia, Mich.) who finished sixth overall with a time of 18:33.8, a new personal best. Seniors Christy Trank (Winnebago, Ill.) crossed the finish line in 18:47.6 in tenth place, while Leah Livingston (Gibson City, Ill.) finished 14th with a time of 19:00.6. Freshman Elizabeth Soper (Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed 18t overall with a time of 19:05.6, just ahead of senior Becca Garst (Peotone, Ill.) in 21st place at 19:09.4.
"The women are improving each week, recovering from some preseason injuries that have limited training," said assistant coach Kyle Rago. "Things are really coming together nicely for them."
The Tigers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 27 with the junior varsity squad competing at the Brissman Lundeen Invitational, hosted by Augustana College @ Saukie Golf Course. The women will start at 5:00 p.m. The varsity squad will travel to the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by University of Minnesota at Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 9:50 a.m.
