MINNEAOPOLIS, Minn. - No one at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota would have guessed that No. 8 Olivet Nazarene University’s Sarah Ray was competing in her first collegiate race ever and coming off of an injury. Ray, a freshman from Warsaw, Ind. started her Tiger running career with an explanation point… not a question mark, finishing eighth overall in a field of 356 when she crossed the finish line in 22:50.6.
The Tigers finished eighth of 34 teams overall, behind seen NCAA Division II institutions. Augustana College (S.D.) captured the title, followed by University of Minnesota-Duluth, Pittsburg State (Penn.), University of Mary (N.D) to round out the top five.
Sophomore Bethany Pilat (Livonia, Mich.) was the Tiger’s second finisher, placing 33rd overall with a time of 23:39.0. Senior Leah Livingston (Gibson City, Ill.) and freshman Elizabeth Soper (Grand Rapids, Mich.) placed back-to-back at 55th and 56th with times of 23:55.8 and 23:56.7, respectively. Rounding out Olivet’s top five finishers was senior Christy Trank (Winnebago, Ill.) who crossed the line in 24:16.8 for 74th place.
The Tigers will return to action Saturday, Oct. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fighting Bee Invite hosted by St. Ambrose University (Iowa) @ Crow Creek Park.
