LOCKPORT, Ill. – Senior Ashley Miller (Springhill, Kan.)
shot a school record opening round of 73 to kick off the spring 2014 season and
help the Olivet Nazarene University women’s golf team begin their quest to
return to the NAIA National Championships. The Tigers got things started with
their first tournament of the season at the University of Saint Francis
University Spring Invitational held March 28-29 at Prairie Bluff Golf Course.
Olivet came out the opening round with a four shot lead over
Bethel College (Ind.). The Tigers got off to a fast start, shooting 324 to lead
the field. Miller’s 73 was the low round of the tournament and took two strokes
off of the school record which was set by sophomore Bridgett Wolff (East
Peoria, Ill.) in the fall. Junior Lydia Bilyeu (Fulton, Ill.) shot an opening
round 80, while Wolff was just four shots back at 84. Freshman Sydney Tyler
(Bloomington, Ill.) opened with an 87 and rounding out the top five Tigers was
sophomore Kelsey Fisk (Greenfield, Ind.) with a 92.
The Tigers had a rough second day, shooting a team 336.
Olivet finished second overall at 660, behind Bethel at 649. Rounding out the
top five were St. Francis at 678, Wheaton College (Ill.) at 705 and Cardinal
Stritch University at 711.
Miller finished second overall in the 42 player field after
a second round 85. A pillar of consistency, Bilyeu matched her opening round
with another 80 to finish third overall.
Wolff finished tied for 12th overall after a second round 88,
while Fisk’s 82 propelled her to a tie for 15th overall. Tyler
finished tied for 20th with a second round 91.
