BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The temperature at game time hovered in the mid-60’s, the rain clouds covered the sky, the field was wet from the half inch of rain that had fallen throughout the day but the No. 9 Olivet Nazarene University women’s soccer team didn’t seem to notice. The Tigers dominated Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Saturday, Oct. 13, defeating the Crimson Wave 8-0.
There were a few extra fans in the stands, despite the rain. The Tiger’s hosted their second annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night. Each player was asked to invite a faculty or staff member who influenced their life at Olivet. The honorees where introduced and honored between halves at mid-field, for all they do to allow our athletes the opportunity to compete.
The Tiger’s showed the honorees just how thankful they are, improving their overall record to 11-2 on the season and remain undefeated in CCAC play and alone atop the conference standings.
The defense, which has yet to give up a goal in conference play, allowed just three shots in the game. Senior goal keeper Wendy Espejel (Ontario, Cal.) posted two saves in route to her seventh shut-out.
Olivet’s offense controlled the ball from the beginning. The Tigers recorded 34 shots, 21 in the first half. The Crimson Wave’s goal keeper, Amy Gasiorowski, was able to save a total of eight shots.
The scoring started by senior Emma Reutter (Mason, Mich.) who scored back-to-back goals at the 11:10 and the 14:23 marks, the second off of a pass by freshman Elisabeth Wahl (Homer Glen, Ill.). Not to be outdone, freshman Elizabeth Hetrick (Plainfield, Ind.) scored back-to-back goals of her own at 16:04 and at 17:46 to put the Tigers up 4-0 in the first half.
Sophomore Lauren Hamilton (Whiteland, Ind.) scored her first goal of the season off of a pass by freshman Sarah Lentini (Kouts, Ind.) at the 54:57 mark. Senior Meghan Pipal (Wheaton, Ill.) added a goal nine minutes later and freshman Jordan Gunn (Peoria, Ill.) add another eight minutes after that. Freshman Michelle Ditchfield (Berkeley, Ill.) recorded her first goal of the season at the 81:54 mark to make the score 8-0.
The Tigers will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16 taking on Robert Morris University (Ill.) in CCAC play.
