BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – It was a beautiful, sunny, almost 80 degree afternoon. There were well over 100 fans in the stands. The No. 10 Olivet Nazarene University women’s soccer team couldn’t have asked for a better fall day to play. The Tiger took full advantage with a 3-0 win over the University of St. Francis Ill.) on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The victory solidified an outright Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference title, a conference tournament opening round bye and a trip to the NAIA National Championships.
Olivet (14-2, 10-0) not only extended its winning streak to 10-games, but the stellar defense and goal keeping abilities of senior Wendy Espejel (Ontario, Cal.) continued their shut-out streak as well. The Tiger’s defense stood strong again against the Saints, allowing just five shots, three of which were on-goal.
It took the Tigers just six minutes to get on the board as senior Jordan Wallek (Chicago Heights, Ill.) netted a pass from senior Meghan Pipal (Wheaton, Ill.). At the 21:51 mark, freshman Elizabeth Hetrick (Plainfield, Ind.) headed a ball in for the second goal of the night off of a pass by senior Katrina Holm (Antioch, Mich.).
Olivet scored its third and final goal just three minutes into the second half when senior Katie Dirkse (Downers Grove, Ill.) took a pass from senior Devin Johnston (Bloomingdale, Ill.). The Tigers ended the night with 17 shots, eight on-goal.
Olivet will put its perfect record on the line on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. as they take on St. Xavier University (Ill.) for their final CCAC regular season game. The Tigers will take the opportunity to honor and recognize the eight seniors on the team who have helped to build the program into the national powerhouse that it has become.
