HASTINGS, Neb. – The No. 2 Olivet Nazarene University women’s soccer team came to the Broncos Classic hosted by Hastings College (Neb.) knowing they would face their highest ranked opponent since last year’s NAIA National Championship game when they faced No. 16 Graceland University (Iowa). The Tigers slipped past the Yellow Jackets 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 6. The Tiger’s weren’t so lucky on Saturday, falling 1-0 in overtime to the host Broncos.
Against Graceland, in what was the NAIA National Game of the Week, the Tigers (3-1) got on the board at the 15:31 mark on an unassisted goal by freshman Ellen West (West Chester, Ohio). The goal marked the first of West’s career as a Tiger.
Freshman keeper Sarah Vrosh (Ada, Mich.) posted her third shut-out of the short season, finishing the game with two saves on the only two shots taken by the Yellow Jackets. The Tigers had a scare late in the game when Graceland put a shot in the net, but had it called back for being offside.
On Saturday, the Tigers played the Broncos to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation to send the match into overtime. The game remained scoreless until the buzzer, when Hastings’ Megan Kruse netting a shot that the officials credited.
Vrosh finished the game with eight saves, allowing her first goal of the season. The Broncos had 17 shots, nine on goal.
The Tigers couldn’t find the net, despite their 13 shots taken. Hastings’ keeper Brittany Toth finished with six saves.
Olivet will play host to their second two-day ONU Classic tournament beginning Friday, Sept. 13. First up for the Tigers will be No. 3 Spring Arbor University (Mich.) at 7:00 p.m. They will then face Cincinnati Christian University (Ohio) on Saturday at 7.
