BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - It took 109:35 but the No. 14 Olivet Nazarene University women's soccer team advanced to the finals of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on Tuesday, Nov 12. Knotted after regulation and one overtime, the Tigers narrowly missed their first shoot-out opportunity of the season.
As the temperature dipped into the low 20's and frost beginning to form on anything stationary, sophomore Betsy Hetrick (Plainfield, Ill.) netted a pass from junior Katie Smith (Spring Lake, Mich.) to end the contest and send the Tigers to the title match. The goal was a team leading 19th for of the season for Hetrick, her sixth game-winner.
Olivet (16-3-1) out shot Cardinal Stritch 28-8 on the night, despite the the difference being just 7-5 in the opening half. Wolves keeper, Sauvey, Kathleen was a wall in front of the net, finishing with 13 saves. Freshman keeper Sarah Vrosh (Ada, Mich.) finished with five for Olivet.
The Tigers will advance to the finals on Saturday against the winner of Thursday's Robert Morris University and Trinity International University match up. If Robert Morris wins, the Tigers will be on the road. Should Trinity International win, the finals will be in Bourbonnais.
