WINONA LAKE, Ind. – It took just over six minutes into the
season opener for junior Liz Wahl (Lockport, Ill.) to put the No. 16 Olivet Nazarene
University women’s soccer team on the board against Grace College (Ind.) at the
Grace Classic held Aug. 29-30. The Tigers would go on to win the opener 2-1
before battling Taylor University (Ind.) to a 0-0 double overtime dual on day
Wahl added a second goal in the game with the host Lancers
at the 24:30 mark to lead Olivet (1-0-1), to break the tie after Grace’s
Mallory Rondeau tied the game up at 12:55.
Sophomore keeper Sarah Vrosh (Ada, Mich.) allowed the lone
goal while finishing with eight saves. Offensively, the Tiger were outshot by
the Lancers 19-9.
Saturday’s long draw with Taylor was a statistically
balanced game, much like the 0-0 score. The Tigers took 20 shots, nine on goal
while the Trojans finished with 19 shots, five on goal. Senior McKenzie Hengesh
(Canton, Mich.) and junior Betsy Hetrick (Plainfield, Ill.) led the Tigers with
four shots each, both with two on-goal. Taylor threatened more in the overtime
periods, with three shots on goal that were stopped by Vrosh.
Olivet will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 6 when they
play host to the University of Northwestern Ohio at 1:00 p.m.
