NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 8 Olivet Nazarene University women’s soccer team proved they are ready for the 2012 season by defending their title as champions of the Nazarene Classic. The Tigers dominated Mount Vernon Nazarene University (Ohio), winning 3-0 in the championship game on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Freshman Elisabeth Wahl (Homer Glen, Ill.)got Olivet on the board first, on an assist from senior Katie Dirkse (Downers Grove, Ill.). The Tigers then added two more goals in a six minute span in the second half. First, senior Emma Reutter (Homer Glen, Ill.) connected from the left box off an assist from senior Meghan Pipal (Wheaton, Ill.). The final goal was recorded by sophomore Jessica Higer (Kuna, Idaho) off a pass by freshman Madison Kauzlarich (Almont, Mich.).
“I thought the girls played a very good game,” said head coach Bill Bahr. “We spread the ball around well, you can see that by the three goals by three different players and three different assists.”
The Olivet defense proved itself to be strong, allowing just four shots-on-goal to the Tiger’s 16. Senior goalkeeper Wendy Espejel blanked the Cougars with two saves.
Senior Jordan Wallek (Chicago Heights, Ill.) was named the Classic’s Offensive MVP, thanks to her goal and assist in the opening game against Southern Nazarene University (Okla.). Seniors Katrina Holm (Antioch, Ill.) Rueter, Espejel and Pipal were all honored as All-Tournament Team members.
The Tigers return to action at home on Wednesday, Sept. 5 against Aquinas University (Mich.) at 5p.m.
