BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Day two of the USTA/ITA Regional Tournament hosted by Olivet Nazarene University proved a success. Unlike day one, there was no rain to slow the process down; it was a beautiful breezy fall day. Similar to day one, the Tigers came ready to play.
No. 2 seeded junior Aziza Butoyi (Burundi, Bujumbura) defended her singles title in the event for the third time in as many appearances. Her final two matches of the day came against fellow Tiger teammates, as Olivet represented all four players in the semi-final round.
In the semi-finals, Butoyi defeated unseeded senior Ashlan Allison (Anderson, Ind.) 6-2, 6-2. Allison had earlier knocked-off No. 4 seed Danielle Hoffman of the University of St. Francis 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(5) in order to setup the all Tiger matches. In the other semi-final, No. 1 seed Aurelie Hascoet (Thann, France) defeated No. 3 freshman Seraphine Buchmann (Illnau, Switzerland) 6-3, 6-1.
Hascoet jumped out early in the finals, taking the first set 6-0, but Butoyi battled back to take the final two sets 6-3, 6-4 and capture her third regional title.
The doubles tournament also paired up two Tiger teams in the finals. Buchmann and Hascoet teamed up to defeated Butoyi and Taylor Stephens (Ada, Mich.) 8-4.
Butoyi and the doubles team of Buchmann and Hascoet advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. on October 11-14, 2012.
