Tigers advance in NAIA Championship

MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 14 Olivet Nazarene University women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NAIA Women’s National Championship with an 8-1 win over Davenport University (Mich.) on Tuesday, May 14 at the Mobile Tennis Center.
The Tigers (17-6) wasted little time, picking up win in all three doubles matches. Aziza Butoyi (Burundi, Bujumbura) and Seraphine Buchmann (Illnau, Switzerland) defeated Alyssa Fuentes and Emily Spiech 8-5, while Taylor Stephens (Ada, Mich.) and Ashlan Allison (Anderson, Ind.) defeated Marcie Kooyers and Angelica Woods 8-3. In the final doubles match, Charisma King (Kankakee, Ill.) and Lindsey Peterson (New Castle, Penn.) beat Kristi Kuzdal and Katie VanDerLaan 8-6.
Butoyi wasted little time beating Speich at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-2. Buchmann needed a tie-breaker, but defeated Fuentes 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 singles. Stephens won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles over Kuzdal, while Allison easily defeated Kooyers 6-1, 6-0 in the fourth spot. King dominated Woods at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-3. The lone loss for the Tigers was in No. 6 singles where VanDerLaan defeated Clara Ruegsegger (Greenfield, Ind.) 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 10-6 in quite a long match.
Olivet will return to action on Wednesday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m. to take on No. 3 Brenau University (Ga.).
